Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family, it was looked after by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
